Greenlight Screenwriting Lab 2024

The deadline for the GREENLIGHT SCREENWRITING LAB 2024, an initiative to source and train talented new Irish screenwriters and script editors, is fast approaching.

Greenlight Screenwriting Lab will see Danú Media, in association with Greasán na Meán Skillnet and National Talent Academy Film & TV, partner with course director Philip Shelley on a new scriptwriting development programme for Irish screenwriters and script editors.

The script entry submission period closes on Friday March 1st 2024 at 5pm. The lab is open to writers resident on the Island of Ireland and Irish writers resident overseas. Only six places are available.

Only writers who do not have a broadcast credit as a television writer or theatrical release as a feature film writer may apply (although produced short films – 20 minutes or less – and episodes of soaps / continuing drama series – are exempt).

Greenlight Screenwriting Lab was launched by Galway-based production company, Danú Media in 2023. Philip Shelley has run the Channel 4 Screenwriting Course for 13 years. Graduates of the C4 course have gone on to script for Doctor Who, Sex Education, The Young Offenders, Ackley Bridge, The Haunting of Hill House, and Coronation Street.

Greenlight Screenwriting provides support and up-skilling opportunities to emerging script writers and script editors through hands-on industry-led training and mentoring. Participants will be mentored by Philip and other industry professionals to create, develop and write a TV drama pilot episode (for a series or serial), and create a 2-3 page outline and pitch for the series/serial as a whole.

Participants will spend six months working on their idea through in-person weekend workshops, one-to-one meetings, and feedback. There will also be guest speakers and opportunities to meet and network with industry professionals. The programme will also offer shadow opportunities for three people interested in script editing.

Criteria around Diversity, Equality and Inclusion will also be taken into account when short-listing writers for interview. The working language of the training will be English; however, we particularly welcome writers who are fluent in Irish and wish to write material as Gaeilge.

The course dates are 11th & 12th May 2024 in Galway and 19th & 20th October 2024 in Dublin. Writers will be paid a fee for participating in the course and for completing two drafts of their script. They will be required to grant Danú Media a first option to acquire all rights in their script and will be told within six months of delivery whether Danú Media wishes to exercise this option.

“Ireland is full of emerging and exciting talent when it comes to screenwriting,” says Nadine Flynn, Development Executive at Danú Media, “so we are delighted to be able to partner with Philip, and devise this new course, in the hopes it will nurture that talent while also creating opportunities and training for script editors. It’s important to us that we continue to support our industry, and we’re confident that Greenlight Screenwriting Lab will do just that.”

The National Talent Academy Film & TV  is an initiative of Screen Ireland and is managed by Ardán.
